Comment of the composer on the work

Atmosphères was first performed in Donaueschingen in October 1961. The conductor was Hans Rosbaud. It, too, is based on micropolyphonic textures, but in an even more radical form: the piece contains absolutely no rhythmic or melodic motif, its form consisting exclusively of transformations of tone colour and dynamics.
