Comment of the composer on the work
During the years that followed [the premiere of Atmosphères in 1961], I gradually moved away from total chromaticism: Lontano, first performed in Donaueschingen in 1967, is micropolyphonic, but it is also diatonic and is made up of countless unison canons. Multiple octave doublings produce a soft-edged overall sound.
